Talam — the heartbeat of life

Every movement, every breath, carries rhythm within it. Music, where melody and rhythm converge, becomes one of the most profound and unifying forces known to humankind.

In Indian Shastreeya music, rhythm is codified into a vast system of talas — each with its own intricate structure and multiple jaathi variations. Though intellectually deep and complex, this rhythmic beauty is instantly relatable — even a lay listener can feel its pulse, connect with its flow, and rejoice in its symmetry.

What makes it truly timeless is its universality. Beyond language, culture, or boundaries, music speaks directly to the heart — connecting us all at a primal, intuitive level. Its ultimate purpose is to unite, reminding us that beneath all differences, the pulse of creation beats as one.

About Talapravaham

The Talapravaham concert series by Fiddling Monk explores the depth and diversity of the Sooladi Sapta Talams, presenting each with all five jaathis (varieties) through sophisticated, original masterpiece compositions of masterclass artistry.

After the grand success of the previous concerts — Dhruva, Matya, Roopaka, Jhampa, and Thriputa — it’s now time for Ata, one of the most vibrant and mathematically rich talas in the Carnatic system.

Known for its grandeur, symmetry, and aesthetic balance, Ata Tala has inspired several timeless varnams in classical repertoire. Talapravaham – Ata continues this legacy with a fresh vision, featuring five brand-new original compositions — each crafted uniquely for one jaathi, referring to the number of counts (aksharas) in each laghu anga of the tala:

* Tishra — 3 counts per laghu

* Chatushra — 4 counts per laghu

* Khanda — 5 counts per laghu

* Mishra — 7 counts per laghu

* Sankeerna — 9 counts per laghu
